Rescentris customers in these industries include: commercial companies, academic and non-profit research labs, U.S. Department of Energy, and other government research labs and projects.

Team-based multi-disciplinary R&D is the name of the game in the Energy, Biofuels, Petrochemicals, Bio-products, and Energy-related Materials industries.  R&D projects in these industries involve researchers from biology, chemistry, materials research, engineering, and product and process development. R&D organizations are using the CERF framework to facilitate sophisticated team-based collaboration, data management, analysis, and reporting in these industries now. CERF unifies data handling from all of these disciplines into a single R&D enterprise data management platform. CERF meets these technical needs in an easy-to-deploy package that scientists and engineers easily adopt and use. With CERF, teams move rapidly to ELNs from paper-based work and other automated processes with few changes and minimal disruption to current ways of working now.

Installations of CERF range from small labs (5-15 scientists) to multinational industrial corporations. CERF also serves large consortia efforts with 30 or more distinct and geographically dispersed organizations that routinely share research data.

CERF makes scientists and managers happier because it boosts R&D performance by:

  • Increasing efficiency – faster information search and retrieval helps avoid reinventing the wheel; it is also easier and faster to reuse content, document work, and prepare reports.
  • Improving Quality – consistency and accuracy in performing lab protocols and recording and analyzing data, as well as more effective review and approvals processes raise quality.
  • Protecting IP- better recordkeeping to fully capture, protect, and exploit intellectual property.
  • Minimizing Regulatory Compliance Risks – better information control processes facilitate regulatory compliance (PTO, FDA 21CFR11, EPA, and their international counterparts).
  • Increasing Team Productivity and Collaboration – real-time data sharing of data, findings, methods, and reports is easy and secure.   Teams and external partners use role-based sharing and access controls, versioning, and messaging to speed communication without the many problems of file attachments in emails.
  • Finding Expertise – locate and recruiting expertise to solve problems faster.
  • Speeding data collection for mobile workers – with ELN mobility tools for work in the field, lab, or office.

CERF supports scientists across the energy and biofuels R&D lifecycle such as this example: (click to expand)

As a simple example, a project in BioFuels may start by growing marine algae or plants, followed by characterizing complex biological sample materials using biochemical and analytical techniques for separation, processing, and purification.  Next are steps for biochemical engineering using cellular or molecular modifications that are designed to optimize whole-organism fuel/energy output.  The modified algae are then tested using a wide array of biochemical, functional genomics, and metabolomics techniques.  Then bioengineering takes over to ramp up to pilot scale tests with the resulting organisms.  These cycles of characterization, modification, and re-characterization are repeated until the new fuel source meets the design criteria from the points of view of biology, chemistry, energetics, and economics.

Throughout these activities, CERF makes it easy for the users to manage all lab notes, references, experiment data files, images, drawings, movies, spreadsheets, and documents in one place, the CERF electronic lab notebook system.  Rich controlled vocabularies plus social tagging make annotation and searching easy and relevant.   All CERF content is immediately reusable as templates because it is in electronic form.   Scientists access CERF using their preferred computers, whether they are Apple Macintosh® OSX, Linux, or Windows®.

CERF bridges the “silos of science” in the Energy, Biofuels, and Petrochemicals sector because it integrates and unifies the stages in the product R&D lifecycle:

Research & Development Lifecycle

CERF is the best choice for R&D in Energy, Biofuels, and Petrochemicals because it supports and integrates all R&D processes, simplifies data access, and automates workflows. It gives teams more flexibility, agility, access and control of their data. This translates into more power to make better decisions. CERF helps organizations make the best use of scarce people resources, and helps the teams to stay focused on advancing the best projects. For these R&D organizations, the ideal system for empowering R&D is the CERF framework and electronic lab notebook system.
