J. PETER HERZ, CEO
Peter Herz is a versatile executive with a successful track record building high-tech companies. Mr. Herz is a Partner with Whiteboard Management, a Silicon Valley management company that provides executive management and consulting services to startups and businesses executing through a transition. As a consultant, Mr. Herz has advised startup companies including IO Turbine and GridStore in marketing, strategy and corporate development. Previously, he served as interim President of the biological simulation company Entelos, leading the company through an organization-wide restructuring. Prior to Entelos, he was a serial entrepreneur and founding CEO of 3ware, a revolutionary data storage company that brought enterprise class storage to a new generation of large-scale data businesses such as Google, Avid, and CERN. 3ware was acquired by AMCC for $150M.
Prior to co-founding 3ware, Mr. Herz ran North American Consulting for Synopsys, enabling Fortune 500 technology companies to transition to a new methodology for product design – doubling the business in 18 months – and managed customer engineering for Siemens Semiconductor’s (now Infineon Technologies AG) North American embedded control business for data storage with design wins at Seagate and Western Digital. Mr. Herz has broad international experience including a startup in Munich, Germany and managing sales and partnerships in both Europe and Asia.
Mr. Herz also serves as a member of the board of directors of IPextreme, Inc., a semiconductor intellectual property company, and Kendall Investments, a private equity fund-of-funds company.
Mr. Herz holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University and A-levels from Eastbourne College, Sussex, United Kingdom.
JOE DAVID, CFO, COO
Joe has 16 years of experience in accounting and compliance comprised of experience in fundraising, IPO’s, divestitures, and M&A in both startup and multinational company environments. Joe spent 8 years in public accounting at Deloitte and KPMG and has since been Internal Audit Director at Verisign and Financial Services Partner at both KroneDavid and Personic Solutions. Joe’s specialty is in building financial and operational teams with dynamic backgrounds and with emphasis and focus on leadership during the various stages of a company’s growth.
Jeff Spitzner, Ph.D., CSO
Dr. Spitzner has more than 20 years experience as a founder and executive for scientific software and biotechnology companies and is a recognized leader in electronic lab notebooks (ELNs), bioinformatics, and knowledge management. He also serves as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Biomedical Informatics, The Ohio State University. He received his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from The Ohio State University, then conducted postdoctoral studies on DNA-protein interactions and molecular cancer research at MIT. In 1997 Dr. Spitzner co-authored data standards for integrating and exchanging genome research information that resulted in the development of BSML as the pioneering XML technology and data standard in the life sciences.
Jeff Spitzner has numerous publications and gives many invited presentations at leading international research conferences. He has led efforts to win many industry awards. His current activities as Chief Science Officer of Rescentris are in business development, market communications, science, and as product visionary for development of the Collaborative Electronic Research Framework™ (CERF), which uses semantic research ontologies to integrate electronic lab notebooks, informatics and knowledge management in order to provide an electronic record-keeping solution that enhances collaboration, innovation, and R&D productivity.
Joseph Spitzner, Ph.D., CTO
Dr. Spitzner is the designer and chief architect for all of Rescentris’ software products. He is a leading expert in the development of innovative semantic web technology based software systems, including CERF and Science Desktop™. Dr. Spitzner has been an innovator in scientific software and data analysis since 1965. He received a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from Rutgers University in 1968 and taught at The Ohio State University from 1968-1973. From 1973 to 1990, Dr. Spitzner was a business consultant specializing in information science and software applications for data analysis.
In 1997 he was Principal Investigator on an NIH grant to develop standards for integrating and visualizing genome research data. Dr. Spitzner was a founder of the bioinformatics firm Visual Genomics and brought XML/BSML technology to Rescentris. Dr, Spitzner has extensive experience in project management and has led software development efforts and contracts for services at a number of pharmaceutical clients. Dr. Spitzner previously received a CIO of the year award as one of the top 100 Chief Information Officers in the USA.
Sam Edwards, VP Engineering
Over 25 years of management and technical expertise in the software industry, encompassing all phases of product development, working with both startup and large multinational companies including: Commission Junction (ValueClick), Legato, BMC, Hewlett-Packard. Passionate about quality and team empowerment. Experienced Agile coach, ScrumMaster (certified), and Product Owner.
Caren Edwards, VP Marketing
Computer industry veteran with executive experience in marketing, business development and corporate strategy. Positions held include CEO at PM9, VP Business Development at Woodside Logic (SAAS software), VP Marketing Custom Solutions, Director of Marketing at ATT/DRI, Marketing Manager at Hewlett Packard. Over 15 years Principal at BioComputing, consulting to emerging technology companies and venture investors with a science focus including: 3M, IBM Alamaden Research, Microsoft, Apple Computer, Xerox Corporation, Palm One, Autodesk, Amoco Technologies, National Center for Supercomputing Applications, Pfizer, Price Waterhouse. Contributing science journalist to: Genetic Engineering News, I/O publishing BioVenture View.
Received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences from The Johns Hopkins University and completed graduate research in Biophysics. Received a Master of Science in Management from The Sloan School at MIT.
